
K-Wings Week In Review
November 13, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
The K-Wings played three games last weekend. Kalamazoo started the week on Wednesday (11/6), as they traveled to Rockford to battle the IceHogs. Rockford would jump out to an early 2-nothing lead with goals from Kenzie Homer (3) and Clint Wensley (3). The K-Wings would cut the IceHogs lead in half in the later stages of the first period with a power play goal from Richard Keyes (4). The score would remain 2-1 in favor of Rockford until the second period, when Rockford would extend their lead to 3-1 with a goal from Oak Hewer (1). The K-Wings would mount a comeback midway in the second period. With the score 3-1, Kalamazoo would cut the lead to one, with the second power play goal of the game from Keyes (5). Four minutes later the K-Wings would draw even to the IceHogs with a power play goal from Justin Cardwell (7). With the score tied at 3-3, the IceHogs would regain the games momentum, as well as the lead as the IceHogs would score the games next three goals (2 in the second period and 1 in the third period) to put Rockford up 6-3. The K-Wings would try one more comeback attempt midway in the final period, as Kalamazoo would get a goal from Quade Lightbody (1) to make the score 6-4 IceHogs. Rockford would add one more goal late in the game, as the IceHogs would go on to defeat the K-Wings 7-4.
The K-Wings would return to Wings Stadium for games on both Friday (11/8) and Saturday (11/9). On Friday, the K-Wings would host the Fort Wayne Komets. Kalamazoo would get on the board first with a goal from Peter Roed at the 6:36 mark of the opening period. Fort Wayne would explode for the games next 5 goals, including a natural hat trick from Jason Selleke (4,5,6) to give the Komets a 6-1 lead. In the third period, the K-Wings would add two goals from Justin Carwell (8), and Richard Keyes (6), but it wouldn't be enough as the Komets defeated the K-Wings 6-3, in front of the largest crowd of the season at Wings Stadium (4,008).
Kalamazoo would conclude their week on Saturday as they hosted their division rivals the Muskegon Fury. Muskegon would score the games first goal at the 6:25 mark of the opening period with a goal from Brant Blackned (5). The K-Wings would tie the game late in the first period with a goal from Keyes (7). The Fury would regain the lead with less then a minute in the first period with a goal from Andrew Luciuk (11), as the Fury would take a 2-1 lead into the second period. The K-Wings would both goals in the second period, as Jim Brown scored his first goal of the season early in the period to tie the game at 2-2. Kalamazoo would gain the lead midway in the period, with a deflected goal by Craig Bilick (1). The K-Wings would take the 3-2 lead into the third period. However, in the final period, it would be Muskegon that would regain control of the game, as the Fury would rally for three goals in the final 20 minutes to defeat the K-Wings 5-3.
Fast Forward
The K-Wings will hit the frozen floors of the United Hockey League three times this week. The K-Wings will continue their four game home stand on Friday, November 15th, as they host the Quad City Mallards on Slappy Bobblehead Night at Wings Stadium. The first 1,000 fans into Wings Stadium will receive a FREE Slappy Bobblehead. The game will be the second meeting of the season. The Mallards defeated Kalamazoo in first meeting of the season by the final of 6-1. In that game, the Mallards power play unit proved to be the difference, as Quad City would go 4 for 6 on the man advantage. Quad City starts the week in a tie for third place in the Western Conference, and just 1 point behind both Muskegon and Rockford for first place.
Kalamazoo will conclude the week with a home and home series against the Missouri River Otters. Kalamazoo will start the two game set in Wings Stadium on Saturday night. The game will coincide with K-Wings Team Poster Night. The first 1,500 fans into Wings Stadium will receive a FREE K-Wings Collector's Poster. Like Quad City, the River Otters will enter the week tied for third place in the Western Conference. This will be the first meeting between Missouri and Kalamazoo this season. Lifetime, the K-Wings are 15-7-0 against the River Otters. Last season, the K-Wings defeated Missouri in three of their five meetings, with two of the victories coming at Wings Stadium.
Keyes Streak Extended
With goals in both games over the weekend, K-Wing forward Richard Keyes has extended his goal streak to 4 games. The 4 game streak is the second longest current streak in the UHL.
Turgeon Among Top Rookies
With 6 points on the season, K-Wings defenseman Tyson Turgeon ranks in the top 10 among rookies in scoring. Entering this week, Tyson is fifth among all UHL rookies in scoring.
Reynaert Still Among Top Goaltenders
K-Wing goaltender Jeff Reynaert will start play this week in the top 5 among UHL goaltenders in both Goals Against Average and Save Percentage. Jeff's 2 .63 GAA ranks him 5th in the UHL. Reynaert's also has a save percentage of .914, which places in 4th place in the UHL.
Disch Suspended
K-Wing forward Andy Disch has decided to pursue job opportunities outside of hockey, and has been placed on the team's suspended list.
Lawrence Reach's Milestone
With his first shift in Saturday night's game against Muskegon, K-Wing forward Mark Lawrence reached a personal milestone. The game on Saturday, was Lawrence's 700th of his career. Of his 700 career games, 370 of those have been with the Kalamazoo Wings (both in the IHL and UHL).
The Obscure Stat of the Week
So far in the month of November the K-Wings are 1-3-1. Lifetime the K-Wings are 22-18-2 in November. The .548 winning percentage in the month makes November the second best winning month for Kalamazoo. The K-Wings best winning percentage comes in February, where the K-Wings are 26-14-2, with a winning percentage of .643.
