Aces add Jakes

Alaska Aces News Release

Anchorage, Alaska – The Anchorage Aces have agreed to terms with rookie winger Jiri Jakes for the remainder of the 2002-03 season.

The 20-year-old Jakes was selected in the fifth round (#147 overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins. He scored 38 goals and assisted on 34 others with 146 minutes in penalties over the past two seasons for Brandon in the Western Hockey League. He also contributed four goals and four assists in 25 playoff tilts for the Wheat Kings. At 6-4, 210 pounds, Jakes (pronounced YA-kiss) will be expected to use his bulk to win battles in the corners.

"Jiri brings a nice combination of strength and skill to the table, it's just a matter of how he responds in game competition," said head coach Rod Davidson. "I think he's going to be tough for opposing wingers to handle."

The signing of Jakes leaves Anchorage with one roster spot open, as defenseman Dave Csumrik will come off the injured reserve list in time for Friday night's series opener against San Diego at 7:00 p.m. at Sullivan Arena. The Aces, who have not played since breaking a seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 win at Fresno November 4, will be seeing the Gulls (5-6-1) for the first time this year. Jack Michaels handles the play-by-play duties for all games on KFQD 750 AM, presented by GCI. Coverage begins 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
