K-Wings Drop The Hammer On Nailers

October 30, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Wheeling, WV- Trailing for the first-time after two periods, the Kalamazoo Wings erased a one goal deficit and defeated the Wheeling Nailers 6-5 in a shootout to extend their winning streak to six games.

Featuring plenty of scoring chances, each team lit the lamp twice in the opening period. Kalamazoo started the scoring with Sam Ftorek's first of the season 7:48 into the first.

The Nailers stormed back less than two minutes later with a tally from Thomas Harrison (2nd). Wheeling gained a 2-1 advantage with a rebound marker from Kevin Schmidt (1st).

Aggressive checking helped the K-Wings tie the game at 2-2, as Matt Jones created a Nailers turnover and quickly sent the puck to Darryl Lloyd, who tipped in his team-leading fifth goal of the season 22 seconds remaining in the period.

Carrying momentum into the second period, Trent Daavettila (3rd) struck 26 seconds into the second period to regain a 3-2 advantage for Kalamazoo.

Including the goal from Daavettila, the K-Wings had outscored their opposition 15-1 in the second period this season, but that domination came to an abrupt halt.

With the pendulum swinging towards Kalamazoo, Wheeling abruptly swung it back towards their direction with a shorthanded breakaway goal from Aaron Clarke (2nd).

Wheeling jumped back ahead 4-3 later in the period with a marker from Andrew Lord (2nd). The Nailers extended their lead 13:22 into the stanza with Dan Henningson's first goal of his pro career.

Off a face-off late in the period, Kalamazoo cut the deficit back to a single-goal, when Daavettila (4th) knocked in a rebound for his second goal of the night.

Kalamazoo pulled even midway in the third period, when Will Colbert (2nd) crashed the net and whacked in a Jones rebound.

The contest remained tied at 5-5 in the remainder of the third period forcing the extra session. No scoring in overtime would bring the K-Wings to their first shootout of the season.

The K-Wings out-dueled the Nailers 2-1 in a six-round shootout to improve their record to 6-0-0-0, one win shy of tying their organization's record for best start, set by the 1990-91 K-Wings.

Kalamazoo's shootout goals were tallied by Rick Cleaver and Jones. Despite scoring in the shootout, Cleaver's point streak is snapped at five games.
