K-Wings defeat Komets in overtime
January 9, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Fort Wayne, IN- The Kalamazoo Wings extended their unbeaten streak in regulation to four games (3-0-1-0) Wednesday night with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Fort Wayne Komets.
Striking first Shawn Szydlowski (1st) gave the Komets the lead 9:05 in the game with a rebound marker.
It didn't take Kalamazoo long to respond. Earning his first point of the season, Brandon Martell (1st) lit the lamp with a wrister from the left circle just 30 seconds after Szydlowski's goal to tie the game at 1-1.
A turnover in the K-Wings zone proved costly for Kalamazoo late in the second period. Making his Fort Wayne debut, Christian Ouellet (4th) walked in alone after stealing the puck in the high slot for his first Komets goal 18:47 into the period. Ouellet, who started the season with the Elmira Jackals, was traded to Fort Wayne as part of a four-player deal on Monday.
Ben Meisner replaced starting Komets goaltender Andrey Makarov (21 saves) 12 seconds into the third period after Makarov left the game with an injury.
Pulling even midway in the stanza, Dustin Cloutier (2nd) tipped in a David Pacan rebound to force overtime. Cloutier has earned points (2 goals, 1 assist) in all three games he has played this season with K-Wings.
In the extra session, Matt Caria (7th) notched his team-best third game-winning goal of the season with a left circle wrister with 1:28 remaining in overtime.
Wednesday's contest was originally scheduled for last Sunday, but was postponed due to inclement weather in both Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo.
Joel Martin made 36 saves for the victory, while Meisner had 14 saves in relief for the overtime loss.
