Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- On Thursday night, the Wheeling Nailers returned to WesBanco Arena, where they took on the Cincinnati Cyclones for the sixth time this season. Cincinnati opened up a 2-0 lead in the latter stages of the second period, and ultimately earned a 4-2 victory, tying the season series at three games each.

The box score was relatively blank during the first period of play, as the two teams combined for one goal, 13 shots, and zero penalties. The lone tally came at the 10:05 mark, when the Cyclones struck first. Dan Eves crashed the puck around the left side of the net, setting up Jonathan Hazen, who connected on the right side of the crease.

In the latter stages of the second period, the contest began to open up, starting with a power play goal for Cincinnati. Anthony Luciani took the puck along the left wing boards, and skated toward the net. After his initial shot was stopped, Luciani picked up his own rebound, sliding it around Mike Condon's left pad. The Nailers battled back with a quick answer, scoring just 54 seconds later. Jacob Lagace took a feed in the slot from Max MacKay, before snapping a shot into the right side of the cage. MacKay and Sahir Gill's assists on the tally gave them points in four straight contests.

Less than one minute into the third, the Cyclones rebuilt their two-goal advantage. Phil Bushbacher's shot off of a face-off went wide of the net, but the rebound was gathered in by Eves, who fed Hazen for a one-timer in the bottom of the right circle. Later in the frame, the visitors added to their lead, when Trevor Lewis pounced on a loose puck, finishing off a play that was set up by Eves and Hazen. Wheeling cut the deficit to two at the 11:24 mark of the third, as Dustin Stevenson set up Drew Schiestel for a one-timer from the right point. Unfortunately, the Nailers couldn't get any closer, as the Cyclones tied the season series with a 4-2 win.

Joe Howe remains undefeated in regulation for Cincinnati, as he picked up the victory, making 20 saves on 22 shots. Mike Condon took the loss for Wheeling, stopping 25 of the 29 shots he faced.

The Nailers will play another home game on Saturday, when they face the Toledo Walleye at 7:00.
