K-Wings and Mallards Make Deal
January 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI-The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce the completion of a trade with the Quad City Mallards. The K-Wings will receive veteran defenseman Dan Hodge and rookie forward Shawn Roed. In return the Mallards will receive a player to be named later, and the K-Wings 1st and 2nd round draft picks in the 2003 UHL Amateur Draft. The K-Wings player to be named later will be released this Monday, January 13th.
With receiving Dan Hodge the K-Wings receive a solid defenseman that can also produce offensively. Hodge was a draft pick of the Boston Bruins in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. The graduate of Merrimack College is in the middle of his ninth season as a professional.
"We (K-Wings) have been looking for ways to improve our defense, and getting a player Dan's caliber will definitely help, "said General Manager/Head Coach Paul Pickard. "Besides being solid in our end, he will also add a new dimension by giving us a d-man that can score at the point." The K-Wings also will add some skill at upfront as they have received Shawn Roed. If the name Roed sounds familiar to K-Wings fans it should, as Shawn is the younger brother of Peter Roed.
The forward has had a standout rookie season, as he started the year as the leading rookie point scorer in the league. Roed left the Mallards after just 16 games for personal reasons.
Shawn played his junior hockey with the Twin City Vulcans (USHL) and the Portland Winter Hawks (WHL). Roed was also a member of the United States Jr. National Team.
"He (Shawn) has the potential to be a special player," said Pickard "We feel he can bring a scoring punch to our offense and especially our power play."
While he has only played in 16 games this seasons, 5 of Roed's eight goals have been scored while on the power play. His five power play goals still lead all rookies in the UHL
In additional moves, the K-Wings have signed rookie defenseman Matt Kruzich. Kruzich is a Kalamazoo native, and was part of the K-Wings training camp. Matt played his college hockey at Michigan State. Also, Kalamazoo has place forward Glendon Cominetti on the injured reserve. Glendon will be on the 14-day IR with an undisclosed injury.
The K-Wings will be in action tomorrow, as the K-Wings host the Rockford IceHogs at Wings Stadium. Tickets for the K-Wings tonight and all home games are available by contacting the Wings Stadium Box Office at (269) 345-5101.
