Sundberg Calms Storm
January 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
The Baton Rouge Kingfish used a goal by Bryan Richardson in the fourth round of the shootout and 43 saves by goaltender Niklas Sundberg to down the Toledo Storm in a shootout, 4-3.
After a scoreless first period, Toledo opened the scoring 3:18 into the second period as Niklas Sundberg only got a piece of Wes Mason's shot as it rolled up his sleeve and into the back of the net. Darryl Bootland added an assist on the goal.
The Kingfish answered five minutes later on the power play. Mike Oliveira picked up a loose puck off a rebound and flipped over Mike Minard to tie the game at one. Mike Kiesman and Clark Jones added the assists on the power play goal.
Toledo used another wired bounce as they took a 2-1 lead at the 13:28 mark of the second. Trevor Read dumped the puck into the corner and the puck took a Storm bounce right to the front of the net where Niklas Sundberg couldn't handle the puck. Timo Helbling added an assist on the goal.
Marquis Mathieu answered for the Kingfish as he buried a rebound on the power play past Minard to tie the game at two before the end of the second period. Mike Kiesman added his second assist of the night while Sam Paquet chipped in a helper on the goal at the 15:20 mark of the period.
Matt Ellis gave the Storm a 3-2 lead 1:32 into the third period as he fired a slap shot over the shoulder of Sundberg on the power play. Bootland added an assist on the goal.
The Kingfish fought back. Sam Paquet tied the game at three as he stuffed a wrap-around past Minard at the 6:41 mark of the third period. Clark Jones and Jerry Gernander added the assists on the goal that sent the game to overtime.
The overtime session didn't produce a winner as neither team could mount much offense in the extra session.
Both team scored in the first round of the shootout, but it was Bryan Richardson's goal in round four that was the difference as Niklas Sundberg stonewalled the remaining four Toledo shooters for the win.
The Kingfish are back in action next Friday, January 17th when they visit the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Catch all the action on Baton Rouge's Best R & B, 104.5 WZRB beginning with the Kingfish pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.
