Wednesday - 12:08 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA
RHP Robert Gsellman (1-3, 4.61) vs. LHP Andrew Misiaszek (0-0, 6.00)
TODAY'S GAME: Iowa and Columbus meet today for the second game of their six-game series. With the I-Cubs up a game after their victory in the opener, they'll hand the ball to Robert Gsellman for his ninth start as an I-Cub. Gsellman has gone 1-3 for Iowa this season with a 4.61 ERA (14ER/27.1IP). Though he ran into some trouble and dropped three straight decisions at the start of the month, he got back on track with his last outing, going five scoreless innings against Louisville. He'll match up with Columbus' Andrew Misiaszek, who will make the first start of his professional career today. Misiaszek made his Triple-A debut on June 17 of this season and has thrown just three innings for the Clippers so far over three relief outings. He has no record and a 6.00 ERA at this level after opening the season 2-1 with a 0.56 mark (2ER/32.0IP) with Double-A Akron.
BACK IN ACTION: Last night, Iowa faced Nolan Jones for the first time this season. The outfielder, who is listed as Cleveland's No. 7 prospect by MLB. com, missed Iowa's first series against Columbus as part of a two-month stint on the injured list. Since returning to action, he has hit .292 (19-for-65) with six doubles, a triple, a home run and 14 RBI in 17 games. Jones picked up right where he left off against the I-Cubs last night, going 2-for-4 with two extra- base hits and the team's only two RBI. In 13 games against Iowa over the past two seasons, Jones has now hit .341 (15-for-44) with seven doubles, a triple and five home runs. He has taken ten walks, driven in 12 runs, scored 12 runs and stolen two bases. In 2021, the extra-base power gave him a team-high .850 slugging percentage against the I-Cubs, which contributed to a 1.321 OPS. That was good for the fourth-highest OPS of any opposing player against Iowa last season (min. 15 AB's).
CROOK THE CROOK: Narciso Crook reached base on a single last night before stealing his 11th base of the season, moving him into a first-place tie with Zach Davis for the I-Cubs team lead. Davis had held sole possession of the lead since May 26, when he surpassed Dixon Machado. Crook wasted no time in making up the difference, going a perfect seven-for- seven in stolen base attempts in the month of June. He has not been caught stealing since May 26, and his seven swiped bags lead the team this month by a four. With just under half of the season behind him, Crook is only two bases away from his single-season career high, set in 2015 with Single-A Daytona. The 2022 season is now his fourth with ten or more stolen bases out of seven total years in professional ball so far.
LEIBRANDT PERFECT: Since joining the I-Cubs on May 27, Brandon Leibrandt has done a little bit of everything for Iowa. He has started four games, pitched middle relief once and closed out last night's game, earning just the second save of his career. It was his first save since 2014, when he got one with the GCL Phillies in his first professional game on June 20. Leibrandt was perfect out of the bullpen last night, throwing four innings without allowing a single base runner. The 29-year-old struck out one batter over his four perfect frames, lowering his ERA on the season with Iowa to 5.40. It marked just the third time this year that the bullpen has gotten a save without also earning the win.
KEEP IT ROLLING: Greg Deichmann went 2-for-4 out of the nine-hole last night, extending his hitting streak to a season-long eight games. Last night marked the first multi-hit game of the streak for Deichmann, as the first seven games were all one-hit performances. Entering today, he is now one hit shy of tying the longest streak of his career, set last year with Triple-A Las Vegas. He had that nine-game hitting streak from July 13-23 last year, just three days before he was traded to Chicago on July 26. Including his nine-game streak, he is currently on the fifth eight- game streak of his career. Over his five-game streak, the outfielder is hitting .333 (9-for-27) with one double, three runs batted in and three walks. His average on the year is now .244 (38-for-156) through 48 games.
IT FINALLY HAPPENED: In the first inning of last night's game, Iowa got a home run from Jared Young, ending the streak of seven consecutive games without a deep fly. Young padded his home run lead on the team, getting his 12th of the year and driving in his 39th and 40th runs of the year. Oddly enough, Young was also responsible for the team's last home run, dating back to June 18th in the sixth inning against Omaha. Over the seven-game stretch without a long ball, the I-Cubs offense still showed power, clubbing 16 doubles and one triple.
MATT ON TRACK: Matt Dermody went five innings yesterday to pick up his third win of the season and his first since May 6. Dermody, who began the year as a reliever, has now made ten of his 15 appearances out of the rotation. With just three months of the season down, Dermody is only two starts shy of his career high, set in 2014 with Single-A Lansing. He has been one of the I-Cubs' most consistent men this season, and his 56.0 innings lead the team, while his ten starts fall second behind Caleb Kilian (11). Though his June started out rough, with nine earned runs allowed in his first four innings, he has bounced back over his last three starts. Over those three outings, Dermody has pitched 14 innings and allowed just three total runs, good for a 1.93 ERA over that stretch. His three wins are now tied for most on the team and rank first among active starters for Iowa.
AGAINST COLUMBUS: Iowa and Columbus will play the second game of their six-game series at Principal Park, with Iowa up 1-0 after their 7-2 win last night in the opener. Iowa is now 4-3 against Columbus this year, with all seven games coming at Principal Park. With the victory, Iowa has now scored seven or more runs in all four of their wins against the Clippers, while scoring three or less in each of their three losses. Through the first seven games, Iowa is outscoring Columbus by 12 runs, at 37-25. Although they lead the season standings 4-3, Columbus still holds the all-time record against Iowa, at 11-8 while going 8-5 all-time against the I-Cubs here at Principal Park.
SHORT HOPS: Last night marked Iowa's fourth consecutive game without an error, marking their longest errorless game streak of the year...Iowa enters today 6-0 in Wednesday home games...with his 1-for-2 night, David Fry has now hit in six straight games against Iowa, which ties for longest streak by an opposing player this year.
