Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - Lewin Díaz and Lewis Brinson each homered and reached base three times on Thursday and the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fought for a 7-6 win over the Durham Bulls at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Six of the first seven Jumbo Shrimp (32-29) in the order reached base three times, and Jacksonville drew a season-high nine walks in the effort, sending Durham (42-19) to their first loss in the series.
The score was tied at six when Chad Wallach and Isan Díaz each walked with one out. A Brinson single loaded the bases for Corey Bird, who walked against Bulls reliever Ryan Sheriff (2-2) to put Jacksonville in front 7-6.
Jorge Guzmán pitched a perfect eighth before walking around a two-out walk in the ninth to earn his second save. Mason Melotakis (1-1) earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings, his first victory since April 25, 2018.
Brinson jumpstarted the scoring with a solo home run in the second. However, in the bottom of the frame, Tristan Gray tripled with one out and came in to score on Miles Mastrobuoni's RBI double. Two batters later, Dalton Kelly notched an RBI base hit to give Durham its first lead.
The lead lasted until the fifth, when Lewin Díaz went yard to tie the score.
Jacksonville then put together a monstrous fifth inning. Bryson Brigman singled and stole second before Brian Miller walked. Lewin Díaz then singled in Brigman to put the Jumbo Shrimp back in front. A Wallach free pass loaded the bases before Isan Díaz drew a bases-loaded free pass to make it 4-2. Lewin Díaz then scored on a double play ball before Bird doubled in a run to widen the gap to 6-2.
Again, though, the Bulls answered immediately. Josh Lowe socked a solo home run in the fifth. In the sixth, Gray launched a two-run long ball before a Kelly single coupled with an error brought in the tying run.
The Jumbo Shrimp send LHP Braxton Garrett (4-3, 4.41 ERA) to the mound in Friday's 6:35 p.m. first pitch against Durham RHP Luis Patiño (1-0, 1.42 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 690 and www.ESPN690.com.
