July 4 crowd of 13,166 sees Mike Hauschild become the 3rd-winningest pitcher in Grizzlies history

July 5, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

In front of a raucous July 4th crowd of 13,166, the Fresno Grizzlies (50-35) beat the Las Vegas 51s (40-46) 5-0 Wednesday night from Chukchansi Park. The attendance was the second highest at home in 2018, behind the May 4th crowd versus Sacramento (13,916). For the first time this season, the Grizzlies blanked their opponents in back-to-back games (eighth shutout). Fresno improved to 17-5 in the first game of a series.

Starter Mike Hauschild (7-6) enjoyed the run support en route to his 29th career Grizzly victory. This pushed him past Eric Hacker for the third all-time in franchise history. He struck out seven in a season-high eight innings, while scattering four hits and a pair of walks.

Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third. Garrett Stubbs smacked his fourth triple of the season down the right field line and scored on a single to right by Nick Tanielu (2-for-4).

J.D. Davis pushed the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when he laced a single to center, plating Myles Straw. In the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Tucker (2-for-3) made it 3-0 when he spanked a triple (second this year) to center field, knocking in Tanielu. It was his 64th RBI of the season, putting him just three back of teammate AJ Reed for tops in Triple-A.

Taylor Jones expanded the advantage to 5-0 in the home half of the eighth when he jolted a pitch to center field, adding Jon Kemmer (2-for-3). The two-run shot was his second longball in Triple-A.

A five-run lead was enough for Kent Emanuel to shut the door on the 51s. Their starter Drew Gagnon (1-4) suffered the loss. He went six frames, allowing five hits, two runs (earned), walking five and fanning five. Gagnon was the starter versus the Grizzlies on July 4th last year, when he was with Salt Lake.

Both teams continue the set with game two of five Thursday night from Chukchansi Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. RHP Trent Thornton (5-6, 3.24) gets the nod for Fresno while Las Vegas counters with RHP Kevin McGowan (4-1, 4.39).
