LAST TIME OUT - The Sea Dogs were able to outlast the Patriots, walking it off in the ninth inning for a 12-11 victory. Somerset started the scoring in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Austin Wells singled to center. Jeisson Rosario then launched a two-run homer to right-center, giving the Patriots a 2-0 lead. The Sea Dogs responded in the bottom of the first frame. David Hamilton singled and stole second. Eli Marrero singled, putting runners on first and third. Koss cleared the bases with a three-run homer, taking the lead 3-2. Cottam reached base on a fielder's choice and Alex Binelas hit the second homer of the inning, a two-run homer that gave the Sea Dogs a 5-2 lead. Portland added four more runs in the bottom of the second, headlined by Binelas' second home run of the game. The Patriots came back with four runs in the top of the fifth. Cristian Perez collected an RBI groundout, Wells had an RBI base hit, and Rosario had a two-run triple, bringing Somerset within three runs, 9-6. Portland scored another run in the bottom of the sixth. Koss doubled with two outs, putting himself in scoring position. Scott brought him home on a two-base sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 10-6. Somerset added two runs in the top of the seventh. Rosario, a former Sea Dog, doubled with one out to complete the cycle. Rodolfo Duran brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, making it a 10-8 game. Somerset took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. All with two outs, Bastidas singled and Duran doubled. Chad Bell cleared the bases with a three-run blast. It was his 12th home run of the year and gave the Patriots an 11-10 lead. The Sea Dogs came back strong in the bottom of the ninth. Koss struck out, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first on the third strike. Scott doubled, putting runners at second and third. Cottam stepped up the plate and walked it off with a double, bringing around Koss and Scott to win 12-11.
SECOND-HALF LEADERS - Through the first three series of the second half, the Sea Dogs have accumulated a 13-5 record, winning two series and splitting one. Portland has garnered the highest run differential in the first three series, outscoring opponents by 32 runs over the first 18 games. They are currently leading the northeast division by two games over Hartford (11-7), as well as leading the entire Eastern League by one game over the Altoona Curve (12-6).
PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF - David Hamilton is looking to get back into the same groove he was in before the four-day break. He has currently reached base safely in his last 12 games, racking up a .261 average (12-for-46), with two doubles, two home runs, four RBI, and seven walks compared to 10 strikeouts. During this time, Hamilton also took the league lead with a total of 40, stealing 11 bases in 12 games. The 11 steals for Hamilton over this span were accumulated over six games, stealing three bases on two occasions, two bases in one game, and a single steal in three games.
IZZY HEATING UP? - Sea Dogs outfielder Izzy Wilson won Eastern League player of the week for his series in Binghamton and continued his heroics at Hadlock Field for the series split with Somerset. Overall in the second half, Wilson is 13-for-37 (.351), with two doubles, two triples, three homers, 14 RBI, and four walks with just four strikeouts. In the first half, Wilson was 17-for-139 (.122), with six doubles, two homers, eight RBI, and 20 walks compared to 56 strikeouts.
PITCHING MATCHUP - Right-hander Brett Kennedy is set to get the Sea Dogs going on the mound after the break. Now in his second month in Portland, Kennedy is putting together his best month yet. Over three starts in July, he has posted a 1-2 record with a 3.38 ERA. After a bumpy, one-out start against the Fisher Cats on July 1, he strung together 7.0 scoreless innings against the Rumble Ponies on the road. His last start came on July 13 against Somerset, where he tossed 6.0 solid innings, surrendering just two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
