Cottam Collects Two Triples in 8-5 Sea Dogs' Victory

Manchester, New Hampshire - Kole Cottam went 4-for-5 with four RBI while collecting his first two triples of the season, boosting the Portland Sea Dogs (14-5, 44-44) to an 8-5 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (7-12, 38-49) on Friday at Delta Dental Stadium.

New Hampshire started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning against Portland starter Brett Kennedy. With one out, Rafael Lantigua reached on a line drive single. Addison Barger stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run homer, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead.

The Sea Dogs responded in the top of the second inning against Fisher Cats starter Paxton Schultz. Stephen Scott and Alex Binelas both singled, putting two runners on. Kole Cottam brought home Scott on a ground-ball base hit to center, making it a 2-1 game. Tyreque Reed loaded the bases with a single and Wil Dalton hit a sacrifice fly, bringing in Binelas to tie the game 2-2.

Two more runs came around to score for the Fisher Cats in the bottom of the third frame with Kennedy still on the mound. Zac Cook led off with a double and Lantigua collected a bunt single, moving runners to the corners. Lantigua stole second, drawing an errant throw from Scott behind home plate, allowing Cook to score from third and give New Hampshire a 3-2 lead. John Aiello knocked in the final run of the inning with a single, increasing their advantage to 4-2.

Portland was able to add a run in the top of the fifth inning. David Hamilton led off with a solo shot to right field, bringing the score to 4-3. The Sea Dogs kept rolling and tied the game in the top of the sixth. Kole Cottam led off with a triple to left. Tyreque Reed singled to left, driving in Cottam, tying the game 4-4.

The offense exploded in the top of the eighth, plating four runs for the Sea Dogs. Ceddanne Rafaela hit a one-out double and Christian Koss brought him in with an infield single and an error, giving Portland their first lead, 5-4. Hudson Potts and Binelas both walked, loading the bases. Cottam ripped his second triple of the night, clearing the bases, and vaulted the Sea Dogs to an 8-4 lead.

New Hampshire fought back in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run. Lantigua hit a ground-rule double to center, putting a runner in scoring position. Aiello hit a line drive single to left, plating Lantigua, bringing the score to 8-5. Ryan Fernandez held the Fisher Cats scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, locking down an 8-5 victory for the Sea Dogs.

Michael Gettys (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned his first win of the year, tossing 1.0 perfect inning. Thomas Ruwe (0-3, 8.31 ERA) picked up his third loss of the season, hurling 0.2 innings, giving up four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats play the second of a three-game set on Saturday with a 7:05 pitch at Delta Dental Stadium. Portland sends RHP Yusniel Padron-Artiles (0-0, 10.38 ERA) to the mound against New Hampshire RHP Adam Kloffenstein (0-4, 5.89 ERA).
