Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

The San Francisco Giants have announced that they have traded C Tommy Joseph to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for OF Hunter Pence and have made the following transaction affecting the roster of Double-A Richmond:

C Tommy Joseph traded by the Giants to the Phillies and removed from the Flying Squirrels active roster [24 + 4 DL]

The move leaves the Flying Squirrels one player shy of the Eastern League maximum of 25 active players. Four players (RHP Chris Heston, RHP Andy Reichard, OF Wendell Fairley, INF/OF Russ Mitchell) are currently on the Disabled List.

Joseph becomes the fourth Squirrel to be traded during the month of July in the first three seasons for the club in Richmond. RHP Daniel Turpen (Boston - 2010), RHP Henry Sosa (Houston - 2011) and RHP Jason Stoffel (Houston - 2011) were the previous three.

Additionally, 2010 Squirrels' MVP Thomas Neal was traded to Cleveland (2011) and 2011 Squirrels' 2B Charlie Culberson (Colorado - 2012) was dealt last week.

Joseph, 21, was considered the #2 overall and top catching prospect in the San Francisco system according to Baseball America. The native of Scottsdale, AZ, was batting .260 with 8 HRs and 38 RBIs in 80 games with the Squirrels. He had also represented the Squirrels in the Eastern League All-Star Game and the Giants in the Sirius/XM MLB All-Star Futures Game
