LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets used eight walks and a half-dozen hits to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets took three of four games in the series and have won five of their last seven games. Portland starter Stolmy Pimentel walked four, hit a batter and allowed one hit in the first inning. He exited after surrendering four runs and recording one out. Sean Kazmar added a solo home run in the second against reliever Caleb Clay. Mark Cohoon earned his third straight win, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings. Adrian Rosario recorded a crucial out in the sixth, striking out Derrik Gibson with the bases loaded to preserve Binghamton's three-run lead. Frank Francisco tossed a scoreless seventh in his third rehab appearance. Ryan Fraser and C.J. Nitkowskicombined to post shutout frames in the eighth and ninth to lock down the win.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Zack Wheeler (9-6, 3.29) makes his 19th start of the season and second against the Harrisburg Senators. Wheeler comes off a loss to the New Britain Rock Cats on July 25. He matched a career-high by allowing ten hits. The righty surrendered six runs (five earned) over four innings and watched his ERA rise above 3.00 for the first time since the middle of April. In his last two starts Wheeler has allowed 13 earned runs over 7.2 innings (15.26 ERA). Wheeler defeated the Senators on June 7, allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings.
RHP Paul Demny (6-6, 5.40) takes the mound for his 22nd start this season and second against the B-Mets. Demny lost his last start to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on July 25. The Texas native allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and five walks over five innings. Demny is searching for his first win in the last five starts with his most recent victory coming against the Altoona Curve on June 27. Demny took a no-decision against the B-Mets on June 5, conceding four runs on six hits over six innings of work in a game Harrisburg would 9-6. Demny was selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft by the Nationals out of Blinn College (JC) in Brenham, Texas.
DECIDED EARLY: The B-Mets starting pitchers have received the decision in each of the last 10 games (5-5). The last reliever to earn a win or loss was Robert Carson when he defeated the Bowie Baysox on July 19. Overall this season, the B-Mets rotation has combined to go 40-40 with a 3.93 ERA and averaged 5.2 innings per start.
BULLPEN BOUNCING BACK: After allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings on July 25, the B-Mets bullpen has provided four consecutive shutout appearances, spanning 8.1 innings. The bullpen has allowed just six hits and issued two walks during the stretch. The B-Mets bullpen has gone 11-16 this season with 19 saves and a 4.40 ERA.
STREAK SNAPPED: Eric Campbell watched his seven-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-2 performance on Sunday afternoon. It was just the second time in the last 15 games in which Campbell did not pick up a hit.
KAZMAR CRUSHING IT: B-Mets infielder Sean Kazmar launched his fourth home run of the season and second in his last three days on Sunday afternoon. He has hit three since July 12. The four home runs are the most the Georgia native has hit since he went deep eight times as a Portland Beaver (SD: AAA) in 2010. His career-high is 13 with the Lake Elsinore Storm (SD: High-A) in 2006.
AGAINST THE SENATORS: The B-Mets have gone 2-4 against Harrisburg this season, including a 1-2 mark at home. Binghamton has hit .276 versus the Senators as a team and compiled a staff ERA on 3.46. They have not met in Binghamton since May 6.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Harrisburg Senators tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen makes his first start since returning from the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) against LHP Danny Rosenbaum.
