Yuma Scorpions News Release

Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona will be the site of two exciting starts by Long Beach Armada pitchers as Jose Lima takes the mound on Thursday night versus the Yuma Scorpions and Hideki Irabu starts on Friday night for Long Beach. Thursday night's game will also feature a $1 Beer Special.

This will be Lima's third start of the season and he may not be around much longer as he excelled in his first two outings against two of the top veteran teams in the Golden Baseball League in Calgary and Edmonton last week. In those two games, facing AAA and a number of major league experienced hitters he went 8 innings in each game as he pitched 16 innings, struck out 7 and walked only 2 and posted an E.R..A. of 2.25. In addition he entertained the crowds as he led the packed stadiums in singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.

For Irabu, Friday night will be his first start in his comeback from knee surgery. The 39-year old is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all-time in Japan and was a key part of two New York Yankee World Series champion teams in the late 1990s. He is now fully re-habbed and ready for his first start, much to the delight of fans in Yuma.

"Lima has major league stuff and was dominating in his first two outings," said Long Beach Armada Manager Garry Templeton. "He can help a big league club right now and I expect him to be picked up. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing Irabu's first outing because if he's anything close to his old form he will be a great addition to the team."
