
Jones' Strong Start Not Enough in Tight Series-Opening Loss to Bradenton

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Damon Jones fired in six strong innings on Monday night, but the left-hander suffered the loss in the Clearwater Threshers' 1-0 loss to the Bradenton Marauders on Monday night at Spectrum Field.
Jones (0-2) battled with Bradenton (19-11) right-hander Cody Bolton (5-0) through five shutout innings, but the Washington State product allowed the only blow of the night in the sixth inning.
With a runner on third base Travis Swaggerty produced the game's only run with a single to left field off the native of Twins Falls, Idaho. The Clearwater (12-18) lefty went six innings without surrendering a walk and striking out seven.
Monday was the fifth time this year Jones struck out more than six batters. The 24-year-old's still sits below 1.00 at 0.92.e
The Threshers had a chance to rally against the Marauders in the ninth when Simon Muzziotti and Alec Bohm reached with singles to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Bradenton reliever Luis Escobar (SV, 3) retired the next three to end the threat and pick up his third save.
The Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate got another strong outing from Bolton, who pitched seven shutout frames allowing just three hits while punching out seven.
Nick Maton provided the offensive spark for the Threshers, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double, picking up his fifth multi-hit performance of the season in the series opener.
The Threshers will look to even the series against the Marauders in game two of the three-game set on Tuesday night at Spectrum Field. RHP Colton Eastman (0-1 1.80) will take the hill for Clearwater against Bradenton's LHP Domingo Robles (2-4 2.68). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. with Threshers Live! The Pregame Show on threshersbaseball.com.
