
Jones goes deep, Reid stops Birds, X's Win 3-2

SIOUX FALLS, SD -- Dustin Jones his his first professional HR and Brett Reid staved off two furious rallies, including striking out Josh Patton with 2 men on in the 9th to beat Sioux Falls 3-2 and take 2 of 3 from the Canaries on Sunday afternoon at the Birdcage.
Last night, the Birds scored 5 runs in the 8th led by a 2 run single from Patton to give the Canaries a 4-3 lead. The shoe was on the other foot on Sunday. Protecting a 3-2 lead in the 9th, Reid gave up a leadoff single by Tim Hutting. Pinch hitter Alex Bardequez got a bunt down but too close to a charging Derek Schermerhorn at first and threw out Hutting at 2nd. Kennard Bibbs would bounce into another fielders choice. Reid would then walk Grant Richardson and would fill the count on Patton before firing a fast ball that looked like it would miss for ball 4. Patton swing wildly and Reid nailed his 10th save of the year.
The X's used power to take a lead off of Canaries starter Pat Mahomes. Alex Llanos would hit a 2 run HR in the 3rd inning. The Canaries would add a run on a RBI single from Richardson in the bottom of the 3rd off of X's starter Tim Layden. Then Jones hit an opposite field HR off of Mahomes leading off the 5th. Sioux City had a 3-1 lead.
In the 8th, the Canaries got a lead off double from Richardson off of reliever Mike McTamney. McTamney would then walk Patton, move the runners over to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch and then hit Beau Torbert on a 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Ben Van Iderstine would hit a grounder to short that Nick McCoola turned into a double play but Richardson scored to cut the lead to 3-2. In came Tony O'Donnell and he hit Patrick Reilly with a 0-2 pitch to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Les Lancaster would again turn to Reid, who got Paul Smyth to ground out to third and end the threat.
Tim Layden went 6 IP, giving up 1 ER on 4 hits to get the win improving to 3-4 on the year. Pat Mahomes lost his 4th straight start, falling to 7-4.
Llanos went 1-2 with his 6th HR of the year. Jones went 1-4 with his first HR of the season and career. Nick McCoola extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Derek Schermerhorn went 2-3 with 2 doubles.
Sioux City takes 2 of 3 from Sioux Falls and evens the I-29 series this season at 6-6. The X's now travel south to Lincoln and begin a 4 game series with the Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. Game time on Monday night is 7:05 with Dusty Bergman for the X's and Ryan Dittfurth for the Dogs. The game will be aired on 1360 KSCJ and xsbaseball.com.
