Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (2-4) left 10 runners on base in a 3-2 loss to the Sioux City Explorers (4-2) on Sunday afternoon. A bright spot for the birds in the loss came in the eighth inning as Patrick Reilly was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season, setting a new American Association record for being hit by pitches in a single season.
The Explorers got on the board first in the third inning as Derek Schermerhorn led of the inning with a double. He was thrown out at third as Jason Tuttle tried to sacrifice him over. Then with two outs in the inning, Alex Llanos homered over the right field fence to give the Explorers a 2-0 lead.
The Birds cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning as Tim Hutting led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An two-out RBI single by Grant Richardson plated Hutting and brought the Canaries within a run, 2-1.
Sioux City would tack on the eventual winning run in the fifth inning when Dustin Jones took the first pitch of the inning over the fence for his first homer of the season. At the midpoint of the game, the Explorers held a 3-1 advantage.
The Birds found some life in the eighth inning as Richardson doubled to lead off the inning, then advanced to third on two wild pitches. Richardson came in to score as Ben Van Iderstine grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. After eight, the Birds were back within one, 3-2.
The Canaries had their opportunity in the ninth inning to tie the game if not win it as Josh Patton struck out to end the game with runners on the second and third.
Pat Mahomes (7-4) pitched a six-hit complete game taking the loss. Tim Layden (3-4) took the win for Sioux City as he went six innings scattering four hits. Brett Reid pitched the final 1.1 innings for Sioux City to pick up his 10th save of the season.
The Canaries will hit the road for six games, starting in Wichita on Monday at 7:05 pm as Ben Moore (5-4) will take the mound for the Birds. The next home game will come against Sioux City next Sunday, July 13th, when the Birdcage will be transformed to an arena for a Day of Death-Defying Acts presented by Royal River Casino and Job Dig.
