AirHogs Sweep Pelicans 5-4

Grand Prairie, TX (07.06.08) -The Grand Prairie AirHogs swept the Pensacola Pelicans in a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon. It is the AirHogs seventh win over the Pelicans.

Grand Prairie grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Edwin Maldonado to bring in David Espinosa setting the score at 1-0.

Pensacola's center fielder Francisco Leandro came up in the top of the third smashing an RBI double to right field to tie the game at 1-1.

The AirHogs came up in the bottom of the fifth to take back the lead. Brandon Carter got on base with a single to right. Espinosa sent him home with an RBI double to left-center field. The Pelicans were able to close the inning with the score at 2-1.

However in the next inning, Grand Prairie extended its lead to 4-1. With the bases loaded, Carter hit a two-run single to center allowing J.B. Tucker and Mike Conroy to come home.

In the top of the seventh, the Pelican's right fielder Josh Morgan ripped a triple to right to get on base. It was Cesar Aranguren who brought him home with and RBI single to right putting the score at 4-2.

With two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Derek Nicholson brought one home with a RBI single keeping the AirHogs ahead 5-2.

Pensacola made the attempt to catch the AirHogs in the top of the ninth, but came up short. With two on, Morgan grabbed a two-run double making it 5-4. He was stranded on third base to end the game.

Kieran Mattison (8-1) earned the win pitching 5.0 innings with 1 hits, 1 runs, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. James Morrison earned his 11th save, pitching the top of the ninth.

Dane DeValk (3-5) earned the loss, pitching 5.1 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts.

Grand Prairie heads west for its first road trip against the El Paso Diablos June 7 at 8:05p.m.
