St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 6, 2008) - The St. Paul Saints finished off a six game homestand by defeating the Lincoln Saltdogs 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium in front of 5,009.
With Charlie Ruud missing his start because of a sore right shoulder, Josh Regits made his first start of the season and was Ruudesque. He hurled 5.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out three to pick up his first win of the season.
The offense helped out Regits and it started in the second when Pichi Balet tripled off the glove of rightfielder Corey Harrington. Tim Brown followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
In the fifth the Saints took a 4-0 lead. Ben Thomas, coming off the disabled list with sprained ligaments in his thumb, singled to center. He was sacrificed to second. Josh Womack followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Tony Mansolino then hit a grounder to first, but Mario Delgado's throw to second pulled shortstop Omar Bramasco off the bag loading the bases. A wild pitch allowed Thomas to score from third and moved the other runners up. Heath Keel followed with a sacrifice fly and Balet knocked in a run with a single Balet finished the game 3-5 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.
The Saltdogs put up two runs in the seventh when Saints reliever Mike Bille walked back-to-back hitters. Bille got Jonny Kaplan to ground into a double play leaving just a runner at third with two outs. Joe Dempsey, however blooped a double inside the right field line to make it 4-1 and Harrington followed with an RBI single.
The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning when Mansolino scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Saints finished their scoring in the eighth when Thomas doubled to center and was sacrificed to third. Womack walked and with two outs the Saints got three consecutive RBI singles from Keel, Balet and Brown.
The Saints head out on the road and begin with a four game series on Monday night against the Shreveport Sports at Fairgrounds Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints will send RHP Mitch Wylie (1-2 2.57) to the mound. The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
