Jones dominant for Trenton in win

(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder starting pitcher Jason Jones tossed 7 shutout innings to lead Trenton past Portland 4-0 on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. With the win, Trenton split a four-game series against the Sea Dogs. Trenton's attendance of 7,961 was its largest crowd of the season. Trenton is now 8-5 against Portland in the season-series.

Trenton (51-34) scored two of its four runs in the 1st inning off of Portland starting pitcher Adam Mills (0-1). With two outs, CF Austin Jackson singled. 3B Chris Malec drove in Jackson with an RBI double to make it 1-0. DH James Cooper then brought home Malec with an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Trenton had four hits in the first inning against Mills. Mills ended up scattering 8 H, and allowed just the two runs in 6 IP in his Double-A debut. The Thunder tacked on two insurance runs in the 7th inning, to take a 4-0 lead. 2B Reegie Corona had an RBI double, and LF Colin Curtis plated another run with an RBI single. Curtis went 2 x 4 with an RBI in the win. Jackson, Cooper and RF Edwar Gonzalez also had two hits for the Thunder.

Jones (9-3) gave up only 2 H in 7 IP. He struck out 7 and did not walk a batter. He ended up retiring 15 straight batters to finish up the outing. Jones is now tied for first place in the Eastern League in wins with 9. Jones earned his first win since 6/1 @NBR. Thunder reliever Mark Melancon tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Jones.

Trenton will start a four-game series on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. LHP Phil Coke (6-3, 3.09) will start for the Thunder against New Hampshire RHP Robert Ray (3-1, 0.92). Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
