Johnstown Claims 2-1 OT Win Over Cyclones
April 1, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones received a solid goaltending effort from backup Scott Tomes, stopping 24 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss at Johnstown on Sunday afternoon. Tomes held the Chiefs off the scoreboard for the last 31 minutes of regulation time to help the club gain an important point in the standings.
The opening period had no scoring, with the Cyclones out shooting Johnstown, 10-5.
In the second period, Zbynek Hrdel tallied his 12th goal of the season at 8:23, with Ian MacLean and Gus Katsuras adding the assists. Hrdel collected a rebound in the slot to the left of Cyclones goaltender Tomes.
The Cyclones knotted the game up at 1-1, when Jean-Michel Daoust hammered home his 31st goal of the season and third in two nights with assists from Greg Stewart and Rory Rawlyk. That sent the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, Johnstown's Gus Katsuras hustled down the ice off the opening draw and slipped his 15th goal of the season past Tomes to end the game.
The game marked the pro debut of Cyclones goaltender Scott Tomes, who was signed after the University of Connecticut closed its season earlier in the month. Tomes posted a 4-7 record with a 3.82 goals against average with the Huskies this season.
Cincinnati, which captured its fourth Kelly Cup playoff berth in team history last night-is now in the hunt for a first round bye. The Cyclones not only have secured a playoff berth, but home ice if they play in the best-of-three opening round. Currently, Cincinnati has a 'magic number' of four to locking up a four-day break in the first round of the playoffs. A Cyclones win or Trenton loss reduces the number by two and a Cincinnati or Trenton overtime loss also reduces the number by one.
The Cyclones are now 36-27-4-2, second in the North Division two points behind Dayton. Johnstown is 32-31-3-3 on the season, fifth in the North Division. Johnstown extends its winning streak to four games with the triumph. Cincinnati concludes its four game road trek, with its final road game of the regular season, Tuesday night (April 3) with a 7:05pm game at Columbia (SC).
