LAS VEGAS - Derek Edwardson scored twice and Tyler Mosienko again provided the game-winner as Las Vegas took control of the Brabham Cup race with a 4-2 win over Alaska before 7,126 at Orleans Arena.
The Aces (46-16-7) have gone four consecutive games without a victory and are just 1-3-3 over their last seven, all of which have been played on the road. Alaska has managed just 18 goals in its last nine games while seeing its lead in the race for the Brabham Cup shrink to a single point. The Wranglers (42-12-14), meanwhile, have won nine straight and, with a game in hand, can clinch first place overall in the ECHL with wins in their final four games, two against Long Beach and two against Stockton, winners of nine in a row as well.
The Aces opened up a 2-0 lead after the first period with a pair of power play goals, Peter Metcalf's 13th (matching his career-high) at 4:43 and a tip-in by Kevin Croxton after a dish from Metcalf with 1:48 left in the frame. Vegas stormed back in the second period, as Edwardson scored the first of his two on the power play only 30 seconds into the stanza and again on a delayed penalty at the 9:53 mark. A mistake by Alaska on another Wranglers power play led to Mosienko's game-winner with 2:23 left in the period, a shot chipped over Derek Gustafson's shoulder resulting from a blown coverage.
After killing an Aces power play to begin the third period, Joe Tellari pounced on a loose rebound and provided an insurance goal with 13:26 left in regulation. Alaska spent most of the rest of the period shorthanded, with Metcalf and Zack Fitzgerald receiving match penalties. The Wranglers out-shot the Aces 16-5 in the final 20 minutes and 32-24 for the game and completed a sweep of the season series, 6-0, including a 2-1 overtime win last night.
Alaska returns home for its final three regular season games against last-place Utah (22-39-8), the last team to win in regulation at Sullivan Arena but a club that has gone winless in its last seven games. Since that 6-4 loss on January 5, the Aces have gone 17-0-1 in their last 18 games on home ice. The three-game series opens Wednesday, April 4, and continues Friday and Saturday, with all three contests beginning at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for the games against the Grizzlies as well as the 2007 Kelly Cup playoffs are now available at participating Fred Meyer locations or by logging onto www.alaskaaces.com.
