Trenton Devils News Release
DAYTON, OH (April 1, 2007) - The Trenton Titans scored four power play goals for the second game in a row, including three in the third period, to come from behind and defeat the Dayton Bombers, 5-4 at the Nutter Center on Sunday afternoon.
Though the Titans had already secured a spot in the Kelly Cup playoffs with Toledo's win over Wheeling, Trenton made it a perfect week and remained tied with the Storm in third place in the North Division.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the final frame, the Titans began their flurry on the man-advantage once again when Troy Riddle took a feed across the offensive zone from Scott Bertoli and sent a one-timer past the blocker of Adam Berkhoel at 7:57. Skating on a 5-on-3 over two minutes later, Mike Manley won the face off to the point for Jake Ortmeyer and headed to net to bang home the rebound from Berkhoel's pad save.
Bertoli picked up the eventual game-winner with 5:41 left in regulation on a pinpoint shot from the goal line that snuck under the crossbar for his second of the game and 30th of the season.
The Titans broke the scoreless tie at 17:15 of the first period thanks to a two-man advantage. Riddle threw a pass from the far circle to Les Haggett on the top of the crease, where he tipped it home for his 22nd maker of the year. Paul Kelly, however, made sure the score would be knotted at one heading into the intermission, winning a draw back to Scott Ford at the blueline and deflecting the ensuing shot into the net.
Dayton took their first lead of the game 2:53 into the second stanza as Ryan Reid pounced on a loose puck in the Trenton's zone and sizzled a slapshot into the top corner. The Titans answered back with their 12th shorthanded goal of the year. As Luis Tremblay intercepted a clearing attempt and fired a shot toward the net, Bertoli cut into front to tip in his first of the contest. The Bombers in turn responded on the power play 1:04 later when Trevor Hendrikx placed a perfect wrist shot past a screened Gregg Naumenko to put Dayton back up 3-2. Mike Berry registered a power play goal with 45 seconds left in the game to complete the scoring.
With his 24 saves in the match, Naumenko notched his fourth consecutive win and his 23rd of the year.
The Titans finished 4-for-9 on the man-advantage and 6-for-8 on the penalty kill.
The Titans begin the last week of the regular season on Thursday, April 5 at 7:00pm against the Reading Royals. Listen to all of the Titans action live on WBCB-1490AM or via B2 Networks at www.trentontitans.com
