Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Johnson City saw a seven-run advantage disappear, but rebounded to sweep Elizabethton with a 10-9 victory in seven innings on Sunday night at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark.
The win is the second consecutive one-run triumph for Johnson City, who held on for a 6-5 win over Elizabethton in Game 1 of the series on Saturday.
The Doughboys (10-19-1) led 8-1 in the fourth inning on Sunday, but the River Riders (16-15) erased that lead with seven runs in the next three frames to send the contest to the final inning tied, 9-9.
Damani Thomas worked a walk to lead off the frame, then stole second base. After advancing to third with two outs, Thomas then came in to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and give Johnson City a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Doughboys reliever Garrett Simmons had dealt with some traffic on the basepaths in the sixth inning, but struck out the side in succession in the bottom of the seventh to hand Johnson City the win.
The game started off with seven straight Doughboy batters reaching base, and four runs scoring courtesy of Jaxson Crull, Cade Sumbler, Joe Vetrano, and Cherokee Nichols. Johnson City extended their lead to 6-1 in the second inning and 8-1 after the top of the fourth inning.
One night after Nichols went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, the Doughboys right fielder picked up where he left off, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs in Sunday's win. Crull was the other Doughboy to finish with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Carlos Nolasco got the start for Johnson City on the mound and shined in his Doughboys debut, tossing three innings while scattering four hits and just one run.
Johnson City now returns to TVA Credit Union Ballpark to start a six-game homestand starting Monday. The Doughboys welcome the Danville Otterbots to town for a two-game series beginning on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
