Joel Carreno Works Seven Innings But Richmond Tops Fisher Cats 1-0

(Manchester, NH)---Joel Carreno allowed one run on two hits in seven strong innings but the Fisher Cats dropped the opener of a three-game series to Richmond 1-0 on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The 25-year old Carreno (1-3), who has appeared in 16 Major League games with the Toronto Blue Jays 2011-2012, allowed only a solo homer to Ryan Caven in the top of the third inning and a single by Daniel Mayora in the seventh inning. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Richmond starter Craig Westcott (6-4) worked a season-high eight innings plus a batter in the ninth without allowing a run. He gave up four hits, walked two and struck out four. After allowing a lead-off single to New Hampshire shortstop Brian Bocock in the ninth, the Flying Squirrels turned to southpaw Tom Vessella. Ryan Goins struck out trying to bunt and Mike McDade hit into a doubleplay to end the contest. Vessella earned his second save for Richmond (27-31).

Sean Ochinko singled in the seventh inning to extend his hit streak to 11 games for New Hampshire (21-35).

The series with Richmond continues on Wednesday at 7:05pm. The first 1,500 fans through the gates at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium will receive a Fisher Cats Rally Cap courtesy of Mt.
