Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Derek Jeter reached on a bunt single and turned a couple of double plays, but the Trenton Thunder (48-34) fell to the Altoona Curve (36-45) 8-1 on Sunday night in front of 9,212 at Waterfront Park. In the highest attended game in franchise history, the Yankee Captain, rehabbing an injured right calf, played six innings and finished 2-4 at the plate in his two-game rehab appearance with the Thunder over the last two nights. Despite the loss, the Thunder finish the seven-game homestand with a 5-2 record.
Jeter, once again in the leadoff and shortstop positions in the lineup, walked in his first plate appearance. The Captain got an early test of that right calf when Ray Kruml lined a ball off of the shortstop Brock Holt's glove. Jeter quickly advanced to third base after the centerfielder Starling Marte overran the ball. Later in the game with runners at first and second base and no one out in the top of the fifth inning, Jeter laid down a perfect bunt up the third base line to reach first base safely.
Thunder starting pitcher Manny Banuelos received his second loss of the season despite allowing just one earned run. The 20 year-old lefty was aided by a Jeter-initiated double play to end the top of the first inning. Before the twin killing, the bases were loaded with just one away and one run had already crossed home plate. Banuelos finished the night by tying a season-high with eight strikeouts.
The 9,212 mark will take the top spot on the list of highest attended games in franchise history. On May 23, 2007, 9,134 fans witnessed Roger Clemens make a rehab assignment for the team. The 18,214 combined total from Saturday and Sunday nights is also the highest two-day total in franchise history. The Thunder will not return to Waterfront Park until July 14 when the team begins a four-game set with the Reading Phillies.
With the seven-game homestand in the rear-view mirror, the Thunder will begin an eight-game road swing to Richmond and Reading Monday night, July the Fourth. Game one of a four-game set with the Richmond Flying Squirrels begins at 6:35 PM from The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Hank Fuerst begins at 6:20 PM.
