Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Tri-City ValleyCats entered the day looking to bounce back from last night's 11-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Wild Things. Olbis Parra took the mound for the 'Cats in his second start after beginning the season in the Tri-City bullpen. After allowing one run to cross on a Wagner Lagrange single in the first, Parra, and the rest of the Tri-City arms, would not allow another Wild Thing to cross the plate. Adam Hofacket, Trey Cochran-Gill, and Oddy Nuñez all worked scoreless outings in relief.
Tri-City would tie it in the third thanks to an RBI double off of the bat of veteran slugger Willy Garcia, scoring first baseman Brantley Bell. The 'Cats would not cross the plate again until the 11th.
Prior to the 2022 season, the Frontier League of Professional Baseball instituted a new extra innings rule, the Sudden Death rule. If regulation ends in a tie, the two teams will play one inning with a runner starting on second, the International Tiebreaker. If the 10th inning ends in a tie, the two teams face off in Sudden Death. The home manager, in this case Washington's Tom Vaeth, decides whether his team will field or hit. Vaeth elected to field. The hitting team starts with a runner, the last recorded out, on first base. If the team in the field records three outs, they win. If the team hitting scores, they win.
After a bloop single by Juan Silverio, and opposite field double by Carson McCusker, Washington walked SS Pavin Parks to load the bases with one out, bringing Jesus Lujano to the plate. Lujano poked one to shortstop and beat out the throw to avoid a game-ending double play, allowing Juan Silverio to score, and Tri-City to even the series. A week ago, Lujano had not hit a walk-off winner in any fashion at any point in his career. Following his walk-off fielder's choice Wednesday night, his career total had risen to 3.
