Jays Take Bite out of 8-Run Thresher Lead, Fall by Two

Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (14-18) cut an eight run deficit to two over the course of two innings but ultimately fell to the Clearwater Threshers (21-11) on Wednesday night by a count of 9-7. A seven-run fifth inning for the Threshers that saw Manager Ken Huckaby Ejected determined the outcome of the game.
RHP Brad Allen (L, 3-1) allowed only a pair of runs in the third before getting to the fifth. Clearwater used a pair of doubles in the inning from 2B Derek Campbell along with a bunt single, infield single, two walks and a 2-run base hit from DH Zach Green to push across seven. In total, Allen went 4.2 innings, giving up nine runs and striking out five.
The game-changing play in the game was not a base hit, but a fielder's choice. With runners second and third, nobody out, in the fifth and two runs already across in the frame, 3B Mitch Walding sent a ground ball to 1B Ryan McBroom. McBroom came home with it to nab RF Cord Sandberg and caught the right fielder in a rundown. C Mike Reeves ran Sandberg back to third and flipped the ball to 3B Emilio Guerrero. As soon as Guerrero began to run him back to the plate, Sandberg spun like a ballet dancer to evade a tag and get back to third base safely. Ken Huckaby came out to argue that the baserunner was outside the base path and found himself ejected from the game after imitating the pirouette himself.
The Blue Jays worked a comeback effort in the fifth and sixth innings, getting to RHP Tom Eshelman (W, 2-1) and ultimately chasing him from the game. They pushed three across in each inning, capped in the fifth by a SS Richard Urena triple off the wall in right. Guerrero also belted his first home run of the year in the sixth to cut the lead to three. Eshelman finished the game with eight strikeouts.
Both bullpens handled the rest of the evening though, and LHP Joely Rodriguez (S, 2) set Dunedin down 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn the save. RF David Harris notched his first dinger of the year in the third with an opposite field home run.
Game four of this four game set will be on Thursday night in Clearwater. RHP Francisco Rios will make his first start in a Dunedin uniform after being promoted earlier in the week. He'll oppose LHP Matt Imhof for the Threshers.
