Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - This was one of those games you just forget about and move on from. As soon as possible.
Stone Crabs pitching allowed 16 hits, the most an opponent has recorded against the team this year, as Charlotte lost to Palm Beach 10-3 on Wednesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
The offense started early and didn't stop against Stone Crabs starter Benton Moss. Casey Turgeon led off the game with a base hit, and Orlando Olivera followed with a single to put two on with one out. Blake Drake tripled into right-center to bring home both men and put the Cardinals ahead 2-0.
After a first-inning Alec Sole RBI single that plated the red-hot Cade Gotta and cut the lead to 2-1, the Cardinals made their move to put the game out of reach. With two on and one out in the second, Turgeon crushed a Moss offering over the Crabs bullpen in right, a three-run shot that extended the Palm Beach lead to 5-1.
Moss (2-2) allowed two more in the third on a Darren Seferina single and a Steve Bean sacrifice fly, leaving the Crabs behind 7-1 through two-and-a-half innings. The 2015 sixth-rounder left the game with one out in the fifth having allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks. Moss did strike out eight, a season high for the righty.
The Crabs made slight feints at a comeback throughout the night. Charlotte scored in the third inning for the eight consecutive game on a Bralin Jackson single, a Gotta double, and a Sole RBI groundout. They loaded the bases down 8-2 in the seventh and 9-3 in the eighth, but scored just one run over the course of the two innings.
The game set several 2016 season records for the Stone Crabs, and not many of them good. On the plus side, Mac James extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 12, the longest of any Stone Crab this year. But the Stone Crabs also allowed 10 runs, tied for a season most, and smashed their previous LOB record with 14 men left stranded. The three hour and six minute contest was the longest nine-inning game Charlotte has played this year.
The action continues tomorrow night with Thirsty Thursday, featuring $2 drafts and $3 bottles of ice cold beer. RHP Greg Harris (3-2, 3.38) takes the mound for the Stone Crabs against Cardinals LHP Ian McKinney (2-2, 2.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35. For tickets, head to the FCB Box Office or call 941-206-HITS any time from 10 a.m. through the game. You can also buy online right here at stonecrabsbaseball.com.
