Clearwater Threshers News Release

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Derek Campbell doubled twice as part of a seven-run fifth inning, and the Clearwater Threshers hung on to top the Dunedin Blue Jays 9-7 on Wednesday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Campbell finished 3-for-4 out of the nine-spot, with a pair of two-base hits, a run, and two RBI's. Carlos Tocci knocked in two runs as well with RBI singles in the third and fifth innings.

The Threshers (21-11) took the lead in the third, when Gabriel Lino unloaded on a 2-0 offering and crushed his first home run of the season to left.

Two outs later, Cord Sandberg walked and stole second, and Tocci knocked him in with a single to left-center to make it 2-0.

Up 2-1 in the fifth, Clearwater hung a seven-spot against starter Brad Allen (3-1).

Campbell got the wheels turning by smacking a double off the left-centerfield wall. Malquin Canelo reached on a bunt single, and took off for second on a 3-2 pitch to Sandberg. The offering missed, but catcher Mike Reeves threw down to second and the ball squirted through to the outfield, allowing Campbell to score on the error.

Tocci followed with a single up the middle to bring home Canelo and make it 4-1. Following a flyout and a fielder's choice, after which Dunedin manager Ken Huckaby was ejected for arguing that Sandberg was out of the base path, Andrew Pullin walked with the bases loaded to earn his first RBI of the season.

Zach Green kept the rally going, delivering a single to center to score two. With two outs, Campbell brought two more runs across with a double down the third base line, putting Clearwater ahead 9-1.

Dunedin (14-18) did not go down easily.

The Blue Jays rallied for three runs in the fifth, and closed the gap with three more in the sixth inning. Dunedin had the tying run aboard with two outs, before Ulises Joaquin struck out Richard Urena to end the inning.

Joely Rodriguez earned his second save in a Threshers uniform, hurling a perfect ninth. Rodriguez has not allowed a run in six appearances with the Threshers.

Clearwater will go for the series win on Thursday on Taps and Tacos Night at Bright House Field, presented by Tijuana Flats. Matt Imhof (3-1) takes the hill for the Threshers, opposed by Francisco Rios (0-0). First pitch is at 7 p.m., and the game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
