Jacksonville Slam News Release
The Jacksonville Jam (3-0) won their third straight game to open up the American Basketball Association season on Friday night in Orlando against the Orlando Aces (0-2).
The Jam took control of the game early as they led 35-25 at the end of the first quarter and 51-40 at half-time. Myron Anthony paced the way in the first half for Jacksonville as Anthony pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 6 points. Anthony started in place of starting power forward, DeRon Rutledge, who is away from the team this weekend in Houston, TX, where he will get married on Saturday. Jacksonville also played the game without the services of starting point guard, Derrick Williams, who was injured in practice earlier in the week. Williams will be out seven to ten days with a sprained knee.
Anthony Lumpkin truly picked up the pace in the second half as Orlando would not go away and played a spirited game, which saw them cut into the Jam lead several times and take a brief lead with 4:25 to play 96-95. But Lumpkin came to the rescue again with a three pointer on the very next possession to claim the lead back again for the Jam, and Jam would not falter again as a 10-2 run would put Jacksonville up for good 108-98.
Lumpkin scored a season high for the Jam with 33 points. TheAnthony Haymon complimented Lumpkin with a powerful performance with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Jerry Williams chipped in 17 points and Donald Harris added 14 points. Myron Anthony finished with 8 points and a team high 14 rebounds.
The Jacksonville Jam will be at home on Sunday as they will host the South Alabama Bounce (3-2) at UNF Arena. Tip-off is scheduled at 6:05pm. It'll be a very special evening as the Jam will retire NBA/ABA/Jacksonville University Great, Artis Gilmore's #53. Gilmore will be the Jam's 11TH Man for the game vs South Alabama.
