Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jacksonville, FL --- Lorenzo Scott homered and drove in four runs to lead Jacksonville past Carolina, handing the Mudcats their fifth straight loss thanks to a 7-2 defeat at the Baseball Grounds before 6,165 fans on Friday night.
Scott hit a two-run shot in the fifth against James Avery (L, 0-2) to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth, then singled home two unearned runs in the seventh against reliever Lee Tabor to put the game away.
Carolina (21-27) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Kris Negron drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall to leadoff the game against Tom Koehler (W, 14-2). Negron put the Mudcats ahead 2-0 in the third when after a hustle double, scored from second base when catcher Chris Hatcher's backpick deflected off of shortstop Osvaldo Martinez's glove. With the ball slowly rolling into right-center, Negron was waved home. On the play, Negron smacked his head into Hatcher's mitt as the Suns' catcher attempted to catch a high throw from Scott. Negron left the game the next inning, but appeared back in the dugout later in the contest.
Avery, in his third game back at Double-A after off-season surgery, worked six innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. Tabor surrendered three unearned runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of Mudcats errors, with Nick Christiani pitching in his second consecutive Double-A game, working a scoreless eighth.
Koehler earned his Southern League-leading 14th victory when the Suns scored three runs in the fifth, an inning where Koehler was lifted for a pinch-hitter to start the frame. Koehler was trailing 2-0 at the time of the pinch-hitter, but Greg Burns delivered a triple against the left-centerfield warning track to start the rally.
Negron advanced his hitting streak to 14 games, one shy of his season-high.
With the defeat, Carolina's steep freefall continued, dropping 10 games behind first place Tennessee with 22 games remaining in the regular season. Carolina was 13-12 on July 19th and leading the Northern Division by 1/2 game. Since then, the Mudcats have gone 8-15.
Matt Klinker (5-6, 2.75) starts Saturday night against Jacksonville's Jose Rosario (3-2, 2.89) at 7:05 PM ET.
