Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - A pitcher's dual between Wade Miley and Matt Long gave way to the bullpens and the Birmingham Barons were able to pull off a 2-1 victory against the BayBears on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Miley worked the first five frames for the BayBears (62-53, 26-21) and was dominant as he allowed only two singles while fanning four and walking nobody. Long (6-8) was also stellar for the Barons (43-75, 19-29) as he limited the BayBears to just two hits in his six innings of shutout ball.
Christian Marrero was responsible for the breaking of the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh as he blasted the first pitch he saw from Bryan Shaw (3-9) over the fence in right-center to put the Barons on top. Shaw lasted two innings and surrendered two hits with two strikeouts.
Birmingham maintained a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning thanks to the relief efforts of Greg Infante and Kyle Bellamy as they each tossed a scoreless frame. Infante gave up two hits, but both BayBear runners were thrown out trying to steal second.
In the ninth, Bryan Woodall coughed up a lead-off single to Salvador Sanchez. He stole second and advanced to third when Sean Coughlin threw the ball over Woodall's head on a toss back to the mound. After Marrero was intentionally walked, Woodall bounced back to get C.J. Retherford on a grounder to third, then struck out Jason Bour.
With two away, John Shelby was passed intentionally, but Justin Greene came through with a two-strike infield single to score Sanchez, putting the Barons up by two. Anthony Carter (S, 18) had some issues holding the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Collin Cowgill doubled off him and scored on a single by Konrad Schmidt. Schmidt wouldn't leave first, however, as Bryan Byrne fanned in front of a Taylor Harbin flyout to end the ballgame.
The BayBears take on the Barons in game three of their five-game set on Saturday night at 7:05.
