Knoxville Smokies News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies returned to their winning ways on Friday night with an 8-4 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts in the second game of the five-game series at AT&T Field.
The Smokies are now 11-4 against the Lookouts in 2010, and the win keeps Tennessee in first place of the second half North Division standings by six games over the Huntsville Stars.
Smokies starter Chris Rusin earned his second victory in his third start with Tennessee. The southpaw pitched six innings while giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Rusin also walked one batter while striking out six as he improved to 2-1 with the Smokies. Lookouts starter Will Savage took the loss for Chattanooga, and he is now 0-1 in 2010.
The clubs traded runs in the first inning. Tennessee broke the tie in the second inning with a four-run rally. Tony Campana broke the deadlock with his two-RBI double to put Tennessee on top 3-1. Brett Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rusin and advance Campana to third, as the Smokies extended the lead to 4-1. Campana scored just moments later on a balk by Savage to cap Tennessee's second inning rally with the score at 5-1.
The "Morristown Masher" Matt Spencer gave the Smokies some breathing room in the top of the fourth. Spencer hit a three-run homer to right field to give Tennessee an advantage of 8-1. The blast was Spencer's 15th homer in 2010.
The Lookouts added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth off of Rusin to cut Tennessee's lead to 8-3.
Kyle Smit faced his former Lookouts teammates in the seventh, and kept Chattanooga scoreless. Smit was a Dodgers farmhand to begin the season, but was traded to the Cubs organization on July 31 as part of the Blake DeWitt for Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot deal.
After pitching a scoreless eighth inning, Tennessee reliever Ryan Buchter got in trouble in the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jerry Sands hit an RBI single to keep the bases loaded for Chattanooga.
Blake Parker took over for Buchter, and got the final out to preserve Tennessee's 8-4 victory.
The clubs will play the third game of the series on Saturday night at AT&T Field. Craig Muschko will start for Tennessee on the mound. Muschko is 7-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 2010. Jesus Castillo (4-6, 2.87 ERA) will pitch for the Lookouts. The game begins at 7:15 p.m., and fans can listen to the contest on the Smokies Radio Network.
