Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Russell Martin drove in the game-winning runs in both games of the doubleheader in the Suns' 3-2 and 2-1 wins over the Carolina Mudcats in front of 3,278 fans Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
On the second pitch in the ninth inning of game one, Martin lined a home run to left field off Mudcats reliever Kevin Cave (5-2). Martin drew a bases loaded walk from Cave (5-3), who also lost the nightcap without retiring a batter. Cave fell victim to a throwing error on Mike Nixon's attempted sacrifice bunt which developed a rally.
In the first game, all runs came in on home runs. The Mudcats' James Shanks and the Suns' Adolfo Gonzalez each led off the third inning with longballs, tying the game, 1-1, until Martin's game-ending blast.
Suns starter Justin Orenduff allowed one run over five innings and remained undefeated since June 23. William Juarez (6-5), who is scheduled to start Friday, pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the relief victory.
In the second game, the Mudcats (77-54 overall, 36-28 second half) took a 2-0 lead off Suns spot starter Alvis Ojeda. Dennis Anderson and Angel Molina each singled in a run off Ojeda, who allowed two runs over five innings in his first Suns start.
The Suns (77-57, 39-25) scored twice in the fourth off former Suns righty Clint Sodowsky. Jon Weber doubled home Tony Abreu and James Loney singled home Weber to even the score.
With a thinning bullpen, Joel Hanrahan, normally a starting pitcher, inherited the bases loaded in the seventh and induced Anderson to fly out to end the threat. Hanrahan also stranded Reggie Abercrombie at third base with one out in the eighth, preserving the tie. Jonathan Broxton (5-3) pitched a scoreless ninth and became benefactor of the victory.
Right-hander Richard Bartlett (3-2, 5.13 ERA) will make his first start since 2003, opposing Mudcats righty Nic Ungs (7-5, 3.64) at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
