BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Birmingham Barons scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx by the score of 11-6 on Tuesday evening at the Hoover Met in front of 1,770 fans.
The Diamond Jaxx scored six runs early off of starter Nik Lubisich (3IP, 10H, 4R) and reliever Ehren Wasserman (3IP, 3H, 2R) before the Barons were able to get to West Tenn starter Carlos Marmol. In the bottom of the fourth, Chris Young and Casey Rogowski led off the inning with singles before Darren Blakely drove them in with a double to deep center. Ryan Sweeney then flew out to center before Josh Fields plated Blakely with a double down the left field line to cut the D-Jaxx lead in half at 6-3.
Wasserman and B.J. LaMura kept West Tenn off the board the rest of the way and the bats supplied the final knockout blow in the eighth. In the inning, the Barons sent 12 men to the plate and capitalized on four walks and five hits as they scored eight runs to take the 11-6 lead. Blakely, Andy Gonzalez and Jerry Owens each had run scoring singles and Chris Stewart and Pedro Lopez each drew bases loaded walks to put the game away for good.
The Barons continue their final regular season home stand tomorrow night in game two of their three game series with West Tenn. Birmingham sends RHP Kris Honel (5-7, 5.77) to face RHP Jae-Kuk Ryu (9-8, 3.35) in a 7:00 PM match up.
