
Stars shoot past slumping Smokies

Sevierville, Tenn.- Huntsville won it's fourth straight against Tennessee and helped the Smokies to their sixth consecutive loss with a 9-2 final at wind swept Smokies Park Tuesday night.
The Stars scored six times against a beleaguered Tennessee bullpen to pull away. Leading 3-2, Huntsville put the first three batters of the eighth on base against Doug Slaten, and all three scored. Mike Schultz allowed a run scoring Adam Heether double and a two-run single by Brandon Gemoll in the ninth.
Matt Morgan had a pair of hits and Noochie Varner had a pinch hit RBI double in the seventh as Tennessee pulled within 3-2.
Tony Pena (7-12) allowed ten hits but only three runs over seven innings in the loss.
Ty Taubenheim (2-5) picked up his first win since August 2 and Jerome Gamble allowed only one hit over 2 2/3 innings for his fifth save.
Tennessee and Huntsville meet in a double header Wednesday at 5:30. RHP Adam Bass (5-9, 3.93) will start game one for Tennessee against LHP Josh Habel (2-7, 4.91). LHP Clint Goocher (7-11, 5.85) will start game two against RHP Carlos Villanueva (1-1, 7.59).
