Smokies and WIVK Partner in Hurricane Relief Drive
August 30, 2005 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn.- The Tennessee Smokies and WIVK have announced a partnership to send hurricane relief to New Orleans and those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The first 5,000 people who donate either 4 gallons of bottled water or a case of bottled water will receive a free ticket to any of the Smokies remaining home games. Donations can be dropped off at either Smokies Park or the Wal-Mart on Chapman Highway beginning Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m.
"We realize that there will be tremendous needs for weeks and months in the hard hit areas," Smokies General Manager Brian Cox said. "Simply watching news coverage of the area made us realize we needed to step up to the plate and help in whatever way possible, and we know our fans and the people of East Tennessee feel the same way."
Neither the Smokies nor the Wal-Mart on Chapman Highway will be accepting monetary donations. Those who wish to donate funds are urged to contact the American Red Cross.
The Smokies open an eight-game, seven-day homestand Tuesday night against the Huntsville Stars.
