Jackson wins over Carolina

Zebulon, NC --- Joe Dunigan singled home two tie-breaking runs in the eighth inning to lead the Jackson Generals to a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats before 4,677 fans at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.

With the game tied 2-2, Dunigan blooped a 1-0 pitch from reliever Tim Hamulack over shortstop to bring home Jake Shaffer and Scott Savastano to crack a tie that had been maintained since the fifth inning.

Carolina (10-12), which fell for the third straight game, evened the game 1-1 in the first inning on a single by Denis Phipps to score Quintin Berry, who had doubled to left to start the inning.

The Mudcats moved ahead 2-1 in the third when Neftali Soto doubled in Phipps, who finished the game 3-5.

The Generals scored the equalizer in the fifth against Brandon Hynick (L, 1-2) when Shaffer hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Carlos Truinfel.

Hynick pitched his longest start of the year, working 7 1/3 innings, permitting four hits and four runs (three earned). Tom Wilhelmsen (W, 3-4) also went his longest of the season, permitting three runs over 7 2/3 innings, fanning five.

The Mudcats outhit the Generals 11-5, with Berry and Soto adding a pair of hits.

The series continues on Sunday with James Avery (5-8, 4.31) against Andrew Carraway (7-1, 3.26) at 2:00 PM ET.
