Jackson Terrific on Wild Night in Trois-Rivieres
August 20, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes rode starting pitcher Matt Jackson to a series split in Trois-Rivieres Thursday night.
Jackson gave up just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings of work, as the Goldeyes beat the Trois-Rivieres Aigles 4-2 before 1,534 fans at Stade Fernand-Bedard.
The win improves Winnipeg's record to 38-45 on the season and moves the Goldeyes 6 ½ games back of the Laredo Lemurs in the American Association wild card race, pending the outcomes of tonight's games.
As they did on Wednesday night, the Goldeyes scored twice in the top of the first, as Josh Mazzola drove in Adam Heisler and Casio Grider with a two-run double.
After Trois-Rivieres scored a run in the bottom of the second, things got a little wild in the top of the fourth because of an indecisive call from home plate umpire Brandon Johnson. With Luis Alen on first, Mazzola on second and Tillman Pugh at the plate, a pitch got past Trois-Rivieres catcher Kyle Lafrenz. Mazzola scored from second and Alen went to third because Johnson didn't motion the play was dead. Following a quick meeting by the umpires, the pitch was ruled to have hit Pugh, moving Mazzola back to third and Alen to second. This enraged the Goldeyes dugout and led to the ejection of manager Rick Forney, hitting coach Tom Vaeth and Mazzola. After things settled down, Brad Boyer, who replaced Mazzola at third, scored on a bases loaded walk to James Boddicker and Alen scored on a Heisler fielder's choice.
The Aigles scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Rett Varner, Brendan Lafferty and Jailen Peguero combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Heisler, Mazzola and Reggie Abercrombie each had two hits for the Goldeyes, while Mazzola had two RBI.
Jackson picked up the win, while Peguero, who left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, earned a five-out save. Trois-Rivieres starter and former Goldeye Ryan Bollinger suffered the hard luck loss after allowing just two earned runs in eight innings of work.
The Goldeyes continue the 10-game road trip in Ottawa tomorrow for their first series ever in the nation's capital. Kyle Anderson (4-5, 4.38) will start for Winnipeg against the Champions. Game time is 6:00 p.m. and can be heard on Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster.
