Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - In the most crucial game of the season, Gary SouthShore RailCats starter Fernando Gonzlez put the team on his back, going seven innings, surrendering only one run on seven hits and no walks, on the way to a 2-1 win in the rubber match with the Joplin Blasters Thursday.

Centerfielder Jon Jones got the 'Cats (40-43) off to a quick start with a leadoff homer to left field off Joplin (43-39) starter Luis Chirinos and a two-out walk to Alex Hernandez came around to score on Spencer Mahoney's RBI double in the second.

That was all Gonzalez needed, weaving in and out of trouble as reliever Shawn O'Neill worked out of a jam in the seventh and closer Andy Loomis shut the door for his 17th save of the season.

First baseman Dustin Geiger, who came over the South Shore in Monday's trade with the Laredo Lemurs, was removed from the game in the sixth after being hit by a ball on the base path off the bat of Jose Sermo in the fourth inning.

Mahoney, who came over in the trade that sent Ryan Brockett to the Schaumburg Boomers Monday, is hitting .500 as a RailCat with two walks and a sacrifice bunt through his first four games.

The RailCats are now five games behind the Lemurs in the hunt for the wild card with Joplin 1.5 back and the Kansas City T-Bones three games behind Laredo.

The 'Cats head to Fargo to face the Redhawks in a three-game series over the weekend with playoff hopes on the line.
