Blasters Lose Series on the South Shore

Gary, IN-The Blasters outhit Gary SouthShore 10-to-5 but fell 2-1 in the series finale Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard.

Joplin (43-39) lost three-of-four to the RailCats in the series. Gary (40-43) also claimed the season series 5-to-2 and has won seven of its last eight games. SouthShore opened the scoring with a lead-off bottom of the first home run high and deep to left by Jon Jones. It was Jones fourth dinger of the season. Gary tacked on a two-out run in the second as Spencer Mahoney smoked a double to the gap in left-center that scored Alex Hernandez from first. Hernandez had walked with two outs in the inning.

The Blasters did not score a run until the sixth. Omar Luna and Carlos Ramirez both had one-out singles. With two outs, Steven Tinoco punched a liner to right that brought home Luna with Joplin's only tally of the evening.

Fernando Gonzalez posted the win for Gary SouthShore. Gonzalez (3-1) only gave up the one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Luis Chirinos suffered the loss for Joplin despite a quality start. Chirinos (6-7) worked six innings and allowed two earned runs on just four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. RailCats closer Andy Loomis earned his 17th save of the season as he pitched the ninth and gave up a base hit.

In defeat, Omar Luna and Mitch Glasser both had three-hit games for the Blasters. Steven Tinoco also went 2-for-4 with one RBI. For Gary, Steven Mahoney went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Joplin stranded eight base runners and committed two errors in the contest. That ended a run of four consecutive games without a miscue. Joplin's road trip continues with four games in three days at Kansas City starting with a doubleheader Friday night at 5:05. The final Blasters home stand of the season runs from August 24th through August 30th against Lincoln and Grand Prairie.
