Canaries Drop Both Games in Wednesday Night Double-Header against Laredo

Sioux Falls, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries were scheduled to host the Laredo Lemurs in the series opener on Tuesday night, but rain and poor field conditions forced a double header on Wednesday instead. Jason Repko hit a homerun off the scoreboard, and Stephen Bougher tossed a one-hitter through six shutout innings, but the Birds dropped both games in the double dip, losing 7-5 and 1-0 in a pair of seven inning games at Sioux Falls Stadium.
GAME 1:
Starting pitcher Miguel Pena (6-7, 3.57 ERA) gave up three runs in the top of the first inning, including a Denis Phipps two-run home run (12) to put the Birds down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning before Jason Repko hit a one-out, solo home run (8) off the scoreboard in right-centerfield to make it 3-1.
The Canaries went into the bottom of the fifth inning trailing 4-2 before Repko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Brett Balkan to make it a one-run game. The Birds' took their first lead of the night five pitches later when RJ Perucki roped a single into right, driving in Chris Grayson and David Bergin to make it 5-4.
Laredo took the lead back for good in the top of the sixth inning after Kevin Taylor reached base on a one-out single, and later scored on a Juan Silverio two-run home run (10). Catcher Phil Pohl capped the comeback off with a two-out solo homerun (1) to give the Lemurs a 7-5 lead.
Pena battled for the Birds for most of the night, but allowed three home runs in 5 2/3 innings. The south paw allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out three batters in the loss.
Henry Garcia got the start for Laredo, but earned a no-decision after allowing five runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Relief pitcher Ryan Beckman (6-1, 1.28) picked up the win after holding the Canaries scoreless on one hit over 1 1/3 innings. Former Canaries relief pitcher John Brebbia picked up the save (16) in a scoreless inning.
GAME 2:
The Canaries turned to starting pitcher Stephen Bougher (4-4, 4.09 ERA) in the night-cap of Wednesday night's double header. The Birds' received a tremendous effort from the right-hander, who held the Lemurs to just one hit over six shut-out innings.
Bougher tossed 85 pitches during his six innings of work, but left the game in a scoreless tie after throwing 85 pitches. The Canaries turned to closer Chase Johnson in the top of the seventh, but Denis Phipps reached base on a lead-off single, and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring the eventual game-winning run on a Juan Silverio RBI single to left.
The Canaries had a chance to come back in the bottom of the seventh inning after catcher Richard Stock reached base on a one-out double into the game in left-center. Back-up catcher Steve Sulcoski entered as a pinch runner and advanced to third on an RJ Peruck groundout, but was left stranded to end the game after pinch-hitter Angel Chavez grounded out to short to end the game.
Laredo's closer John Brebbia pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning to earn his second save of the night, and 17th save of the season, third-most in the American Association this season.
The three-game series wraps up on Thursday night with RHP Jeremy Strawn (2-12, 5.16 ERA) battling his former team.
It will also be Military Appreciation night, sponsored by Mid-States Audio and Video. Canaries players and coaches will be wearing Military themed jersey's during the game. Veterans and current members of the military can show their ID at the gate and receive special priced tickets.
