Jackson Jumpstarts Attack as Independence Fall Short
April 13, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Independence News Release
Charlotte (NC) - The Charlotte Independence slow start to the 2019 season continued on Saturday night as New York Red Bulls II topped the home team 2-1 at the Sportsplex at Matthews. In his Independence debut, Niki Jackson netted the game's opening goal off at arching Andrew Gutman cross.
However, the Red Bulls rallied off consecutive plays by Tom Barlow for the game's final goals. The Independence and Red Bulls would go scoreless through the second half, even though the home team would see the bulk of the opportunities, outshooting their opposition 9-5.
"The players they're bitterly disappointed down there, as are we all with the result, but not with a lot of the performance," said Independence Head Coach Jim McGuinness. "So that's what we need to focus on. We need to focus on what we did well tonight."
The Independence will return to the Sportsplex at Matthews on a quick turnaround for a Tuesday night match against Bethlehem Steel FC.
