Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD. - For the second time in three games, the Delmarva Shorebirds lost a one-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning and eventually lost 7-3 in 10 innings to the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds (42-74, 21-30) welcomed 2022 first overall pick Jackson Holliday into the fold as he made his debut but the Hillcats (57-60, 22-29) spoiled the party.
After loading the bases with two outs in the second, two more walks from Holliday and Fabian forced in the first two runs of the game for Delmarva.
Lynchburg tied it with two runs in the top of the fifth as they capitalized on two Delmarva errors to plate a run before Dayan Frias tied the game with an RBI single.
Holliday put the Shorebirds back on top, 3-2, with an RBI double in the sixth.
Down to their final out in the ninth, Lynchburg rallied with a double from Jake Fox and another Frias single to score him and tie the game at 3-3.
In the 10th, Lynchburg pushed across the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice from Joe Donovan before Cesar Idrogo knocked in another with a single. Then three wild pitches moved Idrogo and Donovan around the bases, scoring them both, to make it 7-3.
Franco Aleman (2-8) collected the win in relief for Lynchburg. He posted three shutout innings, allowing just a hit, striking out three without walking a batter.
Yaqui Rivera (3-2) suffered the loss for Delmarva after allowing five runs (four earned) in 1.1 innings on three hits and a walk, striking out six.
In his Delmarva debut, Holliday finished 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a walk.
The Shorebirds continue their six-game against the Hillcats at Perdue Stadium on Friday, August 26. Deivy Cruz (1-1, 3.27) is slated to go for Delmarva against Reid Johnston (4-5, 3.93) for the Hillcats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
