JackHammers Ride the Long Ball to Wild Win Over Fielders
July 5, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
ZION, IL- The Lake County Fielders couldn't keep pace with the Joliet Jackhammers, who hit a season high five home runs, losing 11-9 in front of 3,320 Fielders' baseball fans on a warm, windy afternoon at Fielders' Stadium in Zion, IL.
The two teams went back and forth over the first two innings. Brad Correll got the action started with a solo home run to left field in the first inning. The home run was the first ever at the Fielders' new stadium.
Lake County took the lead in the bottom of the first when one Fielders' all-star drove in the other. Joshua Short hit a bouncer up the middle to score Amos Ramon for the first run.
It was announced before the game that the two Fielders' stars will be representing Lake County on the Northern League All-Star team in Tuscon, AZ on July 14th.
Lake County catcher Anthony Esquer then knocked in two on a ground ball to short with two outs. Kevin Rios stepped on second to get one out, but threw the ball away at first, allowing Joshua Short and Brian McFall to score.
The Jackhammers bounced back in the top of the second, scoring four, including a three-run home run to right from Jonathan Wyatt, his first of two in the game.
The Fielders answered in the bottom of the inning with a Brandon Anderson RBI single and an Amos Ramon triple. He then scored on a throwing error by catcher Rafael Mendez, and the Fielders took a 6-5 lead.
The Jackhammers' six run fifth inning proved to be decisive. Going into the inning down 7-5, Freddie Thon hit a towering two-run home run to right, chasing Fielders' starting pitcher Garry Bakker. Corey Bass (2-3), who took the loss, then surrendered four runs on home runs by Josh Flores and Jonathan Wyatt.
The Fielders tried in vain to make a comeback, scoring single runs in the fifth and seventh innings and leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Fielders are next in action at Fielders' Stadium on Tuesday, July 6th at 4:45 pm.
