
JackHammers Launch Five Homers in 11-9 Win

ZION, IL - The Joliet JackHammers (21-22) launched a season high five home runs, powering past the Lake County Fielders (16-25) 11-9 Monday afternoon at the Fielder's new facility in Zion. Joliet improved to 5-2 this season against Lake County and are now only one game under .500.
Both teams took advantage of the windy conditions early, plating 11 combined runs in the first two frames. The JackHammers sent eight to the plate in the second, scoring four times. Roberto Mena cut the deficit to 3-2 with a single and Jonathan Wyatt smashed a three run bomb to put the 'Hammers out in front 5-3.
Lake County put three runs on the board in the first two innings against Rory Shortell. Josh Short and Anthony Esquer knocked home runs in the first with another tally scoring on a Mena throwing error. Brandon Anderson and Amos Ramon drove in two of the three runs in the second, giving the Fielders their second lead at 6-5.
The JackHammers grabbed the lead for good with a six run fifth inning, slamming three home runs. Freddie Thon knocked out Garry Bakker with a two run blast to tie the game at seven. Corey Bass (2-3) came on and retired Ryan Wehrle for the second out of the inning. Rafael Mendez drew a walk, Mena singled and Josh Flores connected on a three run homer to left field for the 10-7 advantage. Wyatt made it back-to-back blasts with his second long ball of the game and an 11-7 lead.
Lake County would threaten the final frames, plating single tallies in the fifth and seventh innings. The Fielders had great scoring opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings. Brian Gartley (3-0) surrendered a leadoff home run to Brian McFall to cut the lead to 11-9. Kyle Dahman entered after back-to-back singles off Gartley with one out and Kyle Higgins singled to load the bases. Dahman induced pop up by Joe Ramos and struck out Anderson to end the rally.
William Jackel loaded the bases in the eighth on three consecutive singles with one out, but got Esquer to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and maintain the two run cushion.
Griffin Bailey closed the ninth to earn his fourth save, walking one before Ramos ended the game with a double play.
Wyatt, Flores, Thon and Brad Correll, who slugged a solo home run in the first, each went yard for the JackHammers. Mena also picked up three singles to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Gartley picked up the victory out of the bullpen, working 2.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits. Shortell went the first four, taking a no-decision after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.
The JackHammers and Fielders continue their three game set tomorrow in Zion. Ross Stout (2-5) will take the mound opposite Ryan Bicondoa (1-2). First pitch is set for 4:45 p.m. with a 4:35 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL
