Bourquin Homers Flyers Past RiverHawks in Series Opener
July 5, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL - Ron Bourquin lifted an opposite field solo home run over the left field wall to lift the Flyers (16-28) over the RiverHawks (19-23) 4-3 at Alexian Field on Monday night.
The RiverHawks struck first in the top of the second when Rich Austin reached on a single and was driven in by an Evan McArthur double. But the Flyers saved an important run on the same play, as Travis Brown gunned Scott down on the relay throw home to hold the RiverHawks lead to 1-0.
The Flyers picked up a couple runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Richard Mercado smoked a single to left and Joe Nowicki powered a two run shot deep over the right field wall, making the score 2-1 Flyers. After not hitting a home run in the first 41 games of the season, Nowicki now has two bombs in the past three games.
The RiverHawks tied the game up in the fourth as Rich Austin reached on a walk and was later driven home by a Travis Scott single.
But in a back and forth battle, Schaumburg took the lead back in the fifth. Newly acquired outfielder Ruddy Yan singled and advanced to second when second baseman Jake Eigsti threw the ball into the Schaumburg dugout. An overthrow by the catcher Scott sent Yan to third and he was later driven home on a Travis Brown single.
The RiverHawks would tie the game up one more time in the sixth. Outfielder Ian Church reached on an error by the shortstop, and scored soon there after on a double by Jono Brooks.
The Flyers took the lead for good in the sixth. Ron Bourquin hit his second home run in three days to give the Flyers the 4-3 lead, which was enough to beat the RiverHawks.
Reliever Brian McCullough came in the sixth inning in relief of starter Alain Quijano (1-5), who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven. McCullough picked up the win on his birthday.
Kyle Ruwe (2-5) took the loss for the RiverHawks despite tossing all eight innings for the squad, scattering nine hits while giving up four runs.
The Flyers and RiverHawks will play the middle game of a three game set tomorrow night at Alexian Field. It's World Cup Night at the ballpark and Sparky, the Chicago Fire's mascot, will be here to root on the Flyers.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the RiverHawks. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 6:50 PM with the game to follow.
