Augusta GreenJackets News Release
The Augusta GreenJackets scored runs in five of the first seven innings to earn a 7-4 win in their series opener with the Charleston RiverDogs on Monday night.
Evan Crawford's first inning home run on the second pitch of the game put the GreenJackets in front from the get-go, but Charleston tied things in their half of the first. A two-out roller up the first base line turned into a run when the ball kicked off Brian Irving's glove and allowed the tying run to score.
The GreenJackets took the lead for good in the second inning. Ryan Lollis' triple down the first base line turned into a run when Zoilo Almonte's throw missed the cutoff man to score Lollis. Augusta added to the lead with a three-run third inning, sending nine men to the plate in the frame. Nick Liles doubled home a pair of runs and scored on Chris Dominguez's RBI single. With the bases loaded and one out, the power went out at Joseph P. Riley Park...and for the GreenJackets. After the 20 minute stoppage, Augusta could do no more in the third against the RiverDogs, leaving the bases full.
The Jackets added a run in the fifth on a roller that went through the legs of first baseman Rob Lyerly and scored again in the seventh on a Ryan Lollis RBI double. Lollis fell a home run short of the cycle in a three-hit night.
Devan Kline's return from the disabled list did not go as planned though, as the RiverDogs touched up the righty for three runs in the eighth before an out was recorded in the inning. With two on, Almonte's ninth home run of the year cut a six-run lead in half. Kline would recover to retire the side in order following the home run. Mitch Lively set the âDogs down in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the year and become the seventh different GreenJacket to earn a save.
Brian Irving (4-1) delivered five solid innings in a spot start, earning his second win in as many starts this year. He allowed one run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Sean Black (4-5) allowed five runs - four earned - on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
With Savannah's 10-4 win over Rome, the GreenJackets remain a game in front of the Sand Gnats for first place in the Southern Division with their victory on Monday night.
Jeremy Toole (2-2, 2.11) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the middle game of the three-game set and will be opposed by Jose Ramirez (2-4, 3.31) in a matchup of righties. First pitch from Charleston will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
